Ancient Egypt at the British Museum

The Egyptian collection is one of the largest and most popular parts of the British Museum, and it is not realistic to cover it all in a single visit. The Ancient Egypt tour is built as one chronological line: it opens in prehistoric Egypt and closes at the moment those symbols were finally read.

How the order builds the story

The first four stops, in Rooms 64 and 63, deal with the beginnings of life and death in ancient Egypt: hunting tools, the earliest naturally preserved body, and model funerary boats. Rooms 62 and 61 then move into developed burial belief — mummy masks, the Book of the Dead, decorated coffins, and a tomb painting of a hunt in the marshes that opens a window onto daily life on the Nile.

The tour then descends to Level 0 to finish on two symbolic stops: the statue of Ramesses II, and the Rosetta Stone that made the whole civilisation readable. The ending is deliberate — the story starts with people and finishes with the key.

Practical tips

• Start in Room 64 on Level 3; it is quieter than the ground-floor Rosetta Stone area.
• The first eight stops are all on Level 3, so there is no repeated climbing.
• Leave the last two stops (guide numbers 203 and 204) as the finale on Level 0.
• Listen offline — the Arabic audio is bundled in the app and needs no network.
• With children, try Twelve objects to see with children, which includes a cat mummy and the Sutton Hoo helmet.
